Garage door stuck? Start here
A garage door that won't open always seems to fail at the worst time: on your way to work, with the car inside, or in the rain. Most failures come down to a handful of causes, and most of them are fixable the same day by a good local company.
Do these first:
- Stop pressing the button. If the opener hums or the door jerks and stops, running it again can strain the motor or bend the door.
- Look above the door. A torsion spring that has snapped usually shows a visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door. If you see that, don't try to lift the door. It's suddenly very heavy, and the spring hardware is dangerous. See broken garage door springs.
- Look at the sides. Is the door crooked, or are rollers out of the track, or is a cable hanging loose? Don't run the opener. See door off track.
- Check the simple things. Is the opener plugged in? Has the breaker tripped? Are the safety sensors near the floor lined up with their lights on? See opener problems.
What we help with
- Broken spring repair: the most common reason a door suddenly won't open.
- Opener repair and replacement: motors, remotes, keypads, safety sensors.
- Off-track doors and broken cables: crooked doors, loose cables, popped rollers.
- New garage doors: when a dented, worn or drafty door isn't worth fixing.
- Safety checks: the monthly tests the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends.
How it works
- Tell us what's happening on the contact page, along with your area (Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania or nearby).
- We point you to independent garage door companies that serve your area.
- You hire directly. You get the quote, the schedule and the warranty from the company itself. It's free to you, and we never mark up prices.
Hiring smart in Virginia
- Check the license for bigger jobs. Virginia law requires a state contractor license for contracting work on a single job over $1,000 (Va. Code § 54.1-1100). New doors and many opener-plus-spring jobs cross that line. You can look up any license on the DPOR License Lookup.
- Get the price before work starts, in writing if you can, including parts and labor.
- Ask what's under warranty: parts, labor, and for how long.
- Be wary of a "$0 service call" that turns into a high-pressure upsell. A good tech explains what failed and gives you options.
Serving the Fredericksburg region
We help homeowners in the City of Fredericksburg, across Stafford County (Stafford, Falmouth, Aquia Harbour and the Quantico area) and Spotsylvania County (Spotsylvania Courthouse, Massaponax, Thornburg and down toward Lake Anna). It's one of Virginia's fastest-growing areas: Stafford's population grew from about 157,000 in 2020 to an estimated 171,000 in 2025, and Spotsylvania's from about 140,000 to an estimated 155,000 (Wikipedia: Stafford, Spotsylvania). That's a lot of garage doors. See our full service area.
